Oftentimes looking at fantastical pictures of various creatures, unusual beasts depicted in historical artworks, I wonder did they really exist? or are they from the artist's imagination? The following painting on wood panel includes 1 human, 3 chubby bees, 2 dogs, 1 rat/mouse, 1 cat and a snake. The depictions of them are not encyclopaedic illustrations of 'real' beasts but these species are still in existence today. Will someone find this in 100 years and wonder if the creatures were real or imagined? Will we care enough for our earth to ensure that they still exist?
Menagerie, acrylic on wood panel, 30cm/11,81"square, 2016
This work is an exercise in patience. I started something and had to abandon it because the composition just didn't work. Instead of sanding it down and using the panel for another planned work, instead decided to create a work that was a practice in patience.
